BOSTON (WHDH) - Local leaders gathered Thursday morning for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast in Roxbury to celebrate the civil rights icon.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, along with other officials and community figures were in attendance, stopping by ahead of a ribbon cutting for the Roxbury YMCA’s new outdoor pavilion, which will host summer learning classes at the Roxbury YMCA’s day camp.
On Friday, the city is also unveiling a new monument honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
After traveling nearly 3,000 miles to Boston, The Embrace is being assembled ahead of the ceremony.
A news release issued for the event said The Embrace “memorializes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King’s time and powerful presence in Boston. Symbolizing the hug Dr. King shared with Coretta after he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, the public art installation situates Boston as a central city in the pursuit of racial equity.”
