NORWOOD, MASS. (WHDH) - Norwood is planning a special send-off Thursday for a local World War II veteran as he leaves for a unique trip.

Anthony Grasso is going to South Carolina to pay respect to the Army lieutenant who saved his life in the war.

That man sacrificed himself by pushing Grasso away when they were hit by an artillery blast in Germany back in 1944.

Grasso says he was inspired to find his lieutenant’s gravesite and thank him after a book written about them was published last year.

“I thought about it and thought about it, then when they started to write the book I said now they opened up the gates. I want to go someday if I could find him, where he’s buried, and I want to go and pay my respects,” he said.

State and local leaders along with veterans and police departments will take part in the sendoff at 11 a.m.
