NEWTON, MASS. (WHDH) - A massive tree that stood for almost 200 years came crashing down onto a house in Newton Tuesday.

The tree, planted in 1825, split and fell onto the house just before noon on Tuesday. The tree hit the house’s office but fell while the entire family was not home. The piece that broke off is only about a third of the tree and the homeowners said they are going to try and save the rest of it.

“Trees actually heal themselves pretty well,” said homeowner Angela Kyn. “We will have to remove some of the other limbs because it is top heavy,”

Bill Kasper said old age probably brought the tree down and he was concerned it would come down during the early spring snow that fell in New England.

A crane is being brought out Wednesday to remove the broke piece of the tree from the house.
