PLYMOUTH, MASS. (WHDH) - Aaron Hernandez debuted his new defense team in court Thursday.
The former New England Patriots star hired high-profile attorney Jose Baez, who represented Casey Anthony, to take the lead in his double murder trial.
Anthony was acquitted of murdering her daughter Caylee.
Now, Baez is defending Hernandez, who is accused of murder two Dorchester men, Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu in 2012.
“Lawyers take cases for different reason, but generally speaking we believe everyone deserves a good defense,” Baez said.
Hernandez is already serving life in prison for the murder of his former friend Odin Lloyd.
Charles Rankin and James Sultan, who represented him in that trial, were present and officially allowed to withdraw from the double murder case.
Baez was asked about the challenges of high-profile celebrity trials.
“Once a case becomes high profile the evidence is somewhat compounded, and what I mean by that is police seem to do a little bit more, and that, I think, is a good thing,” he said.
Ronald Sullivan, Harvard Law professor, was also added to the defense team.
The mother and cousin of one of the double murder victims wept during the hearing. They did not talk to reporters as they left the court.
