AUBURN, MASS. (WHDH) - The Auburn High School baseball team paid tribute Tuesday night to a police officer killed in the line of duty.

Auburn Police Officer Ron Tarentino, 42, was shot and killed Sunday during a traffic stop in Auburn. Baseball coach Eric Swedberg said his team approached him Sunday afternoon with an idea to honor the officer. With playoff chances on the line, the team took the field Tuesday with Tarentino’s initials on the back of their hats.

“It was the least we could do, I wish we could do more,” said Swedberg. The team has close ties to the police department; at least two players are the sons of police officers.

“I was very happy to get a call from Coach Swedberg telling me that they were going to be doing that, I thought it was fantastic,” said Auburn Police Chief Andrew Slukis, whose son is on the team.

Tarentino’s wake will be held on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Charlton. His funeral will be Friday morning at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church.
