BOSTON (WHDH) - The Boston Pops announced Monday that the Pops will begin producing Boston’s July 4 festivities, starting in 2017.

The Independence Day celebrations, which draw more than half a million people to the Hatch Shell for the concert and fireworks, has been produced by David Mugar and Boston 4 Productions for the past 43 years.

Mugar, who recently announced his retirement from the event, will be involved in an advisory role.

“The Boston Pops is honored to take over the leadership and management of one of this city’s most treasured events—the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular—widely recognized as one of the country’s premier Independence Day celebrations,” said Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart.
