PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island state police say a 27-year-old man under the influence of drugs crashed his car into a police cruiser in a highway construction work area, sending two people to the hospital.

Sean Byrnes, of Somerset, Massachusetts, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving and possession of heroin.

The crash happened Thursday afternoon on Interstate 95 north in Providence.

Police say Byrnes’ car struck a truck where workers were repairing a guardrail. The car then struck the parked cruiser and then a passing pickup truck, which then hit another construction vehicle.

Byrnes and the pickup truck driver were taken to Rhode Island Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the trooper and construction workers were uninjured. It could not immediately be determined if Byrnes has a lawyer.
