MEDFORD, MASS. (WHDH) - A member of the Medford High School has been diagnosed with tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis, also called TB, usually affects the lungs and is spread through the air.

The announcement was sent to parents from Medford Public Schools Thursday.

TB does not spread easily, so only those people who have had very close contact with the infected person have possibly been exposed.

The Department of Public Health and the Medford Board of Health are investigating the case.

School officials said TB is difficult to spread in a school environment, as it usually requires long period of direct, close exposure to move from person to person.

The school said it will take all necessary steps to deal with the case.
