BOSTON (AP) — Dozens of Massachusetts lawmakers are criticizing Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey’s crackdown on what she calls copycat assault weapons.
A bipartisan group of 58 lawmakers sent a letter to Healey Saturday, saying she took action unilaterally and with little notice for gun dealers and owners.
They say any major changes to the state’s assault weapons ban should go through the legislative process.
A Healey spokeswoman says claims that she is changing the law and taking guns away from law-abiding citizens are inaccurate and misinformed.
Healey last week sent a notice to gun sellers and manufacturers clarifying what constitutes a “copy” or “duplicate” weapon, including copies of the Colt AR-15 and the Kalashnikov AK-47.
Healey says the rule doesn’t apply to gun owners who bought weapons before the notice was sent.
