FITCHBURG, MASS. (WHDH) - A middle school in Fitchburg is closed for the day Monday due to a large fire that erupted in a former arts school.

According to the Fitchburg Fire Department, the fire broke out in the former BF Brown Arts Vision School on Elm Street.

The arts school was closed down several years ago and has been vacant ever since.

School has been cancelled for the day at the Longsjo Middle School on Academy Street nearby due to smoke in the air. Officials said students getting off the bus were breathing in the smoky air, causing health concerns.

The fire department said smoke has spread throughout the town.

The fire has been contained to just the vacant building.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
