QUINCY, MASS. (WHDH) - An umpire at a high school softball game in Canton passed out during the game and later died.

School officials said Jeff Reynolds was working the bases during a game at Blue Hills Regional Technical School. During the game, witnesses said Reynolds called time out and collapsed near first base, suffering an apparent heart attack.

Among the people watching in the stands was a nurse and a certified EMT. Both helped Reynolds and the nurse administered CPR. Reynolds was conscious when he left the field in an ambulance but later died at the hospital.

Reynolds collapsed during the first game of a doubleheader between Blue Hills Regional Technical and North Quincy. The second game of the doubleheader was canceled. The Blue Hills Athletic Director said he credits both coaches for doing their best to help Reynolds and for protecting their players.

“The girls all asked, did he make it? And it was kind of tough to tell them that no, he did not,” said Blue Hills Athletic Director Ed Catabia.

A wake for Reynolds will be held in Fall River next week. Some of the softball players said they are considering attending as a tribute to Reynolds.
