LAWRENCE, MA (WHDH) — A firefighter in Lawrence was held without bail after an alleged domestic incident early Tuesday morning.
Police say Joseph Carberry, 39, was arraigned at Lawrence General Hospital and charged with discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, assault with a dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct and threats to commit a crime. He is scheduled to have a dangerousness hearing on Friday.
Essex County Assistant District Attorney Lindsay Nasson told the court that police responded to Carberry’s home for a report of a domestic incident. They were told that Carberry was intoxicated and armed.
Officers allegedly heard one or two gunshots from inside the home before a large dog exited the house, barking and growling at officers. Officers told Carberry to take control of the dog and were forced to fire at the dog to stop it from charging at the officers.
Officers again asked Carberry to take control of the dog, which he did. Carberry’s dog was treated and is expected to be OK.
Officers arrested Carberry and found he had a gunshot wound to his leg. Police believe he shot himself. He was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was arraigned.
Police said they found several guns in Carberry’s house. He does have a license to carry but police said that has since been revoked.
