BOSTON (WHDH) -

It’s the season to give thanks, and to help those in need.

Mayor Marty Walsh teamed up with the Boston Rescue Mission for the 24th annual Day of Thanks.

“I’m grateful to be here with all of you to celebrate today,” said Mayor Walsh.

The event serves up a hot Thanksgiving dinner to those less fortunate, and provides thanksgiving food baskets filled with turkey and all the trimmings.

“Today I personally gave out about 50 meals, I think a lot of people well be coming throughout the day,” said Mayor Walsh.

The group started “The Day of Thanks,” nearly 25 years ago.

Throughout the years they have helped more than 28,000 people.

The Rescue Mission said the work wouldn’t get done without the hundreds of volunteers, donors and local organizations who all pitch in to help.

Mayor Walsh said the message this holiday season is simple, help as much as you can, every day.
