ORANGE, MASS. (WHDH) - An elderly man is dead and his wife seriously injured after an apparent home invasion in Orange.

The Northwestern district attorney said the incident happened Wednesday night at the house on River Street. According to police, the woman was transported to UMass Medical Center in Worcester for treatment. She remains hospitalized but family said she is expected to be OK.

Officials identified the victims as Thomas Harty, 95, and his wife, Joanna Fisher, 77.

Investigators searched the house and a car on the property. The road was roped off Thursday and nearby schools were also put into lockdown. Neighbors said they do not know who would want to hurt the couple.

The medical examiner will determine the man’s official cause of death.

After the home invasion, the victims’ car, a silver 2003 Toyota Corolla station wagon with license plate M99949, was stolen.
