CHELSEA, MASS. (WHDH) - A 13-year-old boy was shot by a stray bullet Wednesday night while asleep at his home Chelsea.

Police said shots were fired in a park on Bellingham Street near Bosson Park and a stray bullet went through the window of a building near the park.

The boy’s cousin said the young boy was sleeping on the third floor of their home when a bullet shot him in the shoulder/back area. The cousin said the boy ran from his bed to his mother’s room, screaming in pain.

The boy’s family said he was hit in the back, possibly near his shoulder. The boy was taken to the hospital and is in surgery but is expected to be OK.

Police said the shooting involved a group of young people, and the two suspects in dark-colored hooded sweatshirts were seen leaving the scene in a dark-colored Ford Explorer. Police are searching for the suspects.

People who live in the area say the sound of gunshots in their neighborhood is all too common and needs to stop.

“There is always gang activities up here,” one Chelsea resident said. “We need to stop all of this violence that is going on around here.”
