ANDOVER, MASS. (WHDH) - A woman has been arrested by Andover Police for allegedly driving her child to school while under the influence of drugs on Monday.

Police responded to a report of a woman at Bancroft Elementary School in Andover that appeared to be impaired while dropping off her child.

Mary Ellen Shay, 41 of Andover, has been charged with OUI drugs, wanton/reckless behavior to a child, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Police learned that Shay pulled into a parking lot in front of the school and brought her daughter into school.

Parents at the school are required to sign students into a log book when dropping them off.

According to police, staff members noticed that Shay was having difficulty and appeared to be mumbling incoherently. Staff members then contacted police.

After an investigation, police determined Shay was under the influence of drugs and placed her under arrest.

She has been released on bail.

According to police, the Department of Children and Families has been notified of the incident.
