SAN FRANCISCO, CA (WHDH) — Police in California continue to investigate after a Lowell man was gunned down at a San Francisco park while playing Pokemon GO.
According to investigators, Calvin Riley, 20, was playing the popular game with friends Saturday night in Ghiradelli Square when he was shot in the chest. It happened just before 10 p.m.
A family friend reportedly said that Riley was with a friend at the time of the shooting but got ahead and was out of sight.
The man’s family said the shooting was random but investigators would not confirm that.
Sister Prescille Malo fondly remembered her former student, proudly showing Riley’s old yearbook, where a smiling 8th-grader could be seen.
“He was fun loving, outgoing, friendly guy you’d like to have as a friend,” she said.
Sister Malo said she was in shock to learn her former student, who had relocated with his family to California, had been killed in a popular tourist destination over the weekend.
Riley hoped to one day be a pro-baseball player.
There are extra patrols around the park as investigators continue to search for the shooter.
“The U.S. Park police are definitely on alert and I think it’s fair to say they will be paying closer attention to this area. They do patrol it regularly. I don’t know. Like i said this is an unusual occurrence and we’ll do everything we can to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” said a park official.
No arrests have been made at this time.
Riley’s friends have set up a GoFundMe to help raise money for funeral costs.
