Four hundred members of the Massachusetts National Guard will deploy to Washington, D.C. this weekend to support ongoing enhanced security efforts in the capital region, the Baker administration announced Friday.

The federally-funded mission to support local, state and federal agencies is expected to last 10 weeks, and follows up on an earlier deployment authorized by Baker in late January to support security efforts in the wake of the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol.

Baker signed an activation order Jan. 25 that made up to 700 National Guard personnel available at any time.

About 600 soldiers were sent to D.C. at that time and they returned Feb. 22.

The latest deployment comes at the request of federal authorities.

The U.S. House of Representatives last week canceled votes that had been planned for March 4 due to threats on the Capitol, though nothing like the Jan. 6 attack materialized.
