GRINDSTONE, Maine (AP) — Maine officials say a 78-year-old northern Maine man is dead after an East Millinocket police officer shot him during an armed confrontation.
Tim Feeley of the Maine Attorney General's Office says 78-year-old Robert Bellfleur of Grindstone was fatally shot at about 8:40 p.m. Saturday by East Millinocket Police Officer Seth Burns.
Feeley says Burns and a Penobscot County Sheriff's Office deputy were called to a home about a neighbor who was harassing people at the home. Feeley says Bellfleur was ordered back to his home, but then returned with a shotgun and engaged in an armed confrontation with the officers. That's when Burns shot Bellfleur, who died at the scene.
The shooting is under investigation by the Attorney General's office, which investigates all police-involved shootings.
An autopsy is expected Monday.
