SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The lighthouses that dot Maine’s rocky coast will open to the public for the state’s annual celebration of the beacons.

Saturday is Maine Open Lighthouse Day. The state is home to dozens of lighthouses, and many of them will be open for a rare visit. The open lighthouses include popular tourist sites such as Portland Breakwater Lighthouse in South Portland and more remote locations such as Seguin Island Lighthouse off Popham Beach.

The oldest lighthouse in the state is Portland Head Lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth. It’s among the lighthouses that are open on Saturday. George Washington commissioned the lighthouse, and it was built in 1791.
