Maine state police say a woman was injured when her car struck a horse that was standing in the road.

Authorities say 44-year-old Dawn Theriault of Littleton was driving on Route 1 in that town when her 2002 Lincoln sedan struck the animal at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Police say she was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital with glass in her eyes and cuts to her face.

The horse’s owner, Jessica York of Houlton, told police she doesn’t know how the animal escaped from its fenced area.

The horse did not survive the accident.
