A maintenance worker found a crying baby in the manger of a nativity scene at Holy Child Jesus Catholic Church in New York.
Bishop Octavio Cisnero said the umbilical cord was still dangling from the baby when he was discovered, just a few hours old.
EMTs checked the baby and he appeared to be healthy.
Church members say surveillance cameras caught a woman, possibly his mother entering the church about 20 minutes before the baby was found.
Under New York’s safe haven law, parents can abandon a new born at a safe location such as a church, hospital or police station, but they must notify someone.
It’s unclear if the woman will face charges, and for now police are trying to identify her.
Social services is looking for a home for the newborn, and he already has parish members calling the church volunteering to be his parents.
