ATTLEBORO, MASS. (WHDH) - A man was arrested after police said he tried carjacking a woman in Attleboro on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old woman told police she left a diner and Andrew Dowhan, 35, followed her out and walked extremely close to her. As she was putting her 2-year-old daughter in her minivan, Dowhan allegedly tried to grab the door handle and get inside. The woman said she locked herself in the backseat and called police before driving off.

Police said when they arrived, they found 35-year-old Dowhan trying to get into another unoccupied car. He was arrested and charged with attempted carjacking and disturbing the peace.

“I’m really sorry that happened but I don’t believe he would physically hurt her,” said Dowhan’s mother, Debra Dowhan. “I don’t think he knew what he was doing.” Debra Dowhan said her son has been addicted to heroin for years and was on a new prescription drug she believes made him paranoid and delusional.

Just a day before, police said Dowhan had been arrested on breaking and entering and larceny charges for allegedly stealing a license plate and entering a woman’s garage.
