A hit-and-run suspect was caught in Springfield Friday night by a State Police K9 team after he fired a shot at the trooper and dog.
According to state police, officers received a report of a car traveling at approximately 10 miles per hour on Route 91 southbound around 12:15 p.m. The car was wanted by Springfield Police for its involvement in a hit-and-run crash minutes earlier.
Police said the car exited the highway at Exit 4. The suspect got out of the car at Balise Chevrolet and walked toward Main Street at East Columbus Avenue.
A K9 trooper and his dog found the suspect, and the trooper deployed his dog after the suspect refused to stop. During the deployment, the suspect fired one round from a handgun, but missed the trooper and the dog.
The dog was able to successfully subdue the suspect.
Mohamed Fofanah, 35, of Hartford was arrested and taken to Bay State Hospital for minor injuries. He was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, and mistreatment/interfering with a police dog.
Fofanah will be arraigned in Springfield District Court on Monday.
