MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (AP) — Police say a man faces drunken driving charges after a crash that left a female passenger dead.

The Providence Journal reports that police were called to Third Beach Road in Middletown around 2:30 a.m. Saturday and found a car flipped over on the road.

A 22-year-old woman in the car was taken to Newport Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The male driver was taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries. Police said he appeared to be under the influence.

Police identified the man as 23-year-old Patrick Carson, of Newport. It was not immediately clear if he has obtained an attorney. He was being held until his arraignment.

Police say Carson faces charges including driving under the influence with death resulting.

Authorities have not released the woman’s identity.
