PARIS, Maine (AP) — A Maine man was denied bail during his first court appearance on charges of killing his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend.

Forty-nine-year-old Mark Penley of Peru appeared in court on Friday. A state police affidavit says he sneaked into the apartment shared by Heather Bickford and Dana Hill months ago but decided not to shoot them until he was “ready.”

Police say Penley then shot Bickford and Hill on New Year’s Day. The couple’s children were there, but police say they weren’t harmed. Bickford and Hill were both 31.

The Sun Journal reports Penley told police later on New Year’s Day that he hadn’t harmed Hill or Bickford. However, police say they found ammunition in his vehicle. Defense attorney Maurice Porter said during Friday’s appearance that Penley wants a speedy trial.
