Westport police have arrested a Seekonk man for stealing checks from fundraising campaigns totaling nearly $5,000.

Police had issued a warrant for Patrick Kane, 28, who had held on to personal checks he had already deposited, reportedly changing the date from 2013 to 2015 and then re-cashing the checks. He then re-deposited those checks into his own bank account.

The fundraising efforts over a multiple-year stretch took on several business names, including "Community Efforts."

Kane also allegedly took money from another fundraising drive that targeted residents in Westport, raising money for a constable service.

The bank account that Kane used was under his name and the name of a female relative.

Police identified Kane after bank surveillance video captured him cashing the checks with the changed dates.
