SEABROOK, N.H. (WHDH) - A 75-year-old man is left without heat after a man broke into the basement of his home in Seabrook, New Hampshire, Tuesday night and damaged his heating and cooling system along with some other possessions.
“There’s an axe there that I use to split firewood with; broke all kinds of family memorabilia that I’ve had for 40 years, 50 years,” said Vietnam veteran Michael Ashwood, who added he spent hours cleaning the damage left behind.
Ashwood said he called the police after he woke up to the sound of voices and banging in his basement Tuesday night. Police arrived minutes later and arrested Joshua Pelletier of Kittery, Maine, for the break-in. Officials said Pelletier has a lengthy criminal record.
Ashwood said he’s unsure why his house was targeted but is angry that a person with a criminal background like Pelletier was out on parole.
“I’m confused as to why that occurred,” Ashwood said. “Little anxiety. I mean when somebody invades your home you feel violated.”
Ashwood said the attack left his home without heat as repairs are being made to the system.
Pelletier is being held in jail, but it’s unclear when he’s due back in court.
