MANCHESTER, N.H. (WHDH) - Police in Manchester say a man accused of stealing a woman’s purse from church was later found hiding in a pile of leaves.

The 58-year-old woman was attending church at Blessed Sacrament Church on South Elm Street on Saturday. She told police she placed her purse inside the sacristy and prepared for Mass, but she came back into the room after hearing someone else enter.

The woman says she found a man holding her wallet inside the sacristy and yelled at him as he fled. She then reported the incident to police.

An officer who arrived on scene found a man hiding inside a pile of leaves inside a playground at the Baskerville School. He had tossed the wallet as well as his sweatshirt in an attempt to avoid being caught but had allegedly kept the money from the wallet.

The man was identified as David Hill, 51 of Manchester, NH. He was charged with theft and other charges. Officers found the wallet shortly after arresting Hill.
