METHUEN, MASS. (WHDH) - A driver was killed after police said he went speeding off the highway and crashed into a pile of dirt in Methuen.

Police initially thought the man drove off an overpass but later learned that was not the case. Officials believe the driver came speeding off the southbound side of I-93 and lost control when he got into the Route 110 rotary. He then went off the road and landed in a mound of dirt piled up from construction nearby.

“He just came right off the ramp and he hit the bump and just went right into the air,” said witness Charlie Gaskiel.

The 49-year-old Beverly man was taken to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators are now reconstructing the scene to figure out an exact cause.
