HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release for a fatal double shooting.

The Hartford Courant reports that a judge on Thursday sentenced 23-year-old Joseph Silva.

Prosecutors say Silva shot 22-year-old Joshua Cortez and 23-year-old Alysha Ocasio in Hartford in 2016 over a petty dispute.

Police say Silva shot Cortez in the head, then walked over to a car and killed Ocasio.

A jury took 18 minutes in October to find him guilty of murder and murder with special circumstances.

Silva’s girlfriend, Kailei Opalacz, pleaded guilty in October to helping him get away after the shooting.

Silva’s lawyer says his client maintains his innocence and is planning an appeal.
