BRISTOL, Vt. (AP) — Vermont State Police say a man has been shot during a confrontation with police in the town of Bristol.

Police said the man is in critical, but stable condition and is undergoing surgery at a hospital. The shooting happened about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Two state troopers and a Bristol police officer responded to a domestic violence call and were confronted by a man armed with a firearm. Police say the man refused verbal commands to drop the weapon. The troopers then fired at and struck him. No one else was hurt.

Names of the troopers and the man haven’t been released.

The troopers will be on paid administrative leave for at least five days.

Police are investigating.
