BROOKLINE, MASS. (WHDH) - A man was stabbed and robbed while walking his dog in Brookline Wednesday night and police are now looking for the suspect.

Police have surveillance video of the attacker and are now appealing to the public for help identifying the suspect.

The man was walking his dog just after 9 p.m. on Vernon Street near Coolidge Corner when the suspect came up from behind him. Police said the suspect stole the man’s cellphone and stabbed him three times, twice in the chest and once in the hip. Witnesses said they heard the man screaming for help.

The suspect then ran away, ditching the phone 30 seconds later. Police called the attack “vicious and unprovoked.”

Police said there is an elderly home nearby and they want the suspect off the street as soon as possible.

The man who was stabbed is now recovering from a collapsed lung at a local hospital.

The suspect was last seen running on Vernon Street towards Park Street.

Brookline police say the victim is expected to be OK and this is still an active investigation.
