According to court documents, federal authorities believe an Iranian refugee who lived in Maine for years later went oversees and fought for ISIS.

The documents were unsealed on Monday.

Adnan Fazeli lived in Maine starting in 2009 after fleeing Iran.

Authorities believe he died in Lebanon in January of last year.

In the wake of the investigation, Maine lawmakers said federal officials need to do a better job of screening refugees.

“We should also prioritize the refugees whom we are admitting, so that we are focusing on widows, on children, on seniors, who are far less likely to pose a threat,” said Maine Senator Susan Collins.

The FBI said they started investigating Fazeli shortly after he left his job in Portland to fly to Turkey in 2013 and never returned.
