SALEM, Mass. (WHDH) – Several manholes exploded on Central Street Tuesday afternoon, causing hundreds to lose power.

According to the National Grid, approximately 200 people have lost power. The company is working to restore power.

No injuries have been reported.

Officials believe that a failed transformer in the area of Essex Street. When that failed, several manhole covers were blown off.

The Salem Fire Department is on the scene investigating. Police have closed multiple roads to vehicles and pedestrians including Central Street, Charter Street, Lafayette Street from Derby to Front Streets and Front Street.

The explosions happened at around 3:10 p.m.
