A retired U.S. Marine Corps dog injured in combat was honored in London with a prestigious award.
German Shepherd Lucca, 12, was awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal, the highest honor an animal can receive in the United Kingdom. Lucca served with the Marines for six years, going on more than 400 combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Lucca lost part of one of her legs from an IED.
"She’s got the same personality she had before," said Gunnery Sgt. Chris Willigham, Lucca’s handler. "I owe her my life. She saved me on numerous occasions and I’m very fortunate to have served with her."
The medal has been given to 31 dogs, 32 World War II messenger pigeons, three horses and a cat.
