DENNIS, MASS. (WHDH) - South Dennis community members are showing their support for a woman who is battling cancer by hanging signs on their doors to show they’re part of the “Mary Strong” movement.

“The support is so overwhelming that just going around the block brings tears to your eyes every day,” said Mary Stone of the many homes in her neighborhood that have hand-made “Mary Strong” signs on their doors.

“It wasn’t like we asked them to do it, it was like a domino effect. So every day walking the dog just brought tears to my eyes, that these people are thinking about me,” she said.

Mary has been battling lung cancer that spread to her brain for two years. A neighbor who learned of her battle asked if he could hang the first “Mary Strong” sign outside their home.

Now, there are dozens of homes with signs of their own.

One neighbor even put the “Mary Strong” slogan on his roof with Christmas lights.

“It makes you want to get up in the morning,” Stone said. “Knowing that people are out there cheering you on. It’s awesome to live in a neighborhood like this.”
