BOSTON (AP) — The Massachusetts House has overwhelmingly approved $8 million to offset the potential loss of federal funding to women’s reproductive health organizations.

The bill passed Wednesday on a 140-14 vote, with 20 Republicans joining the vast majority of House Democrats in backing the state funding. Senate approval is likely to come on Thursday.

The state money would cover the loss of federal funding due to a new Trump administration rule covering the federal family planning program known as Title X. The rule, denounced by critics as a “gag rule,” would prevent family planning clinics from making abortion referrals or sharing office space with abortion providers.

The bill would “ensure continuity” of services that are currently provided in Massachusetts.

Planned Parenthood and the American Medical Association have filed a lawsuit challenging the rule.
