WESTON, Mass. (AP) – State transportation officials are getting ready to flip the switch on all-electronic tolling on the Massachusetts Turnpike.
The new system is scheduled to be activated at 10 p.m. on Friday. From that point on drivers will automatically be charged tolls as they pass under 16 electronic gantries along Interstate 90.
It’s hoped that all-electronic tolling will eventually lead to improved traffic flow on the state’s major east-west highway. But short-term bottlenecks are likely as crews work to demolish the existing tollbooths.
Transportation officials said Monday that the first phase will involve demolition of the center areas of toll plazas, causing traffic to be detoured to the right and left sides of the plazas.
All of the existing tollbooths are expected to be removed by the end of next year.
