Retired MBTA Transit Police Sgt. Richard “Dic” Donohue discussed the need for better preparation for officers and their families after critical injuries on Thursday.
Donohue, who was critically injured in the Watertown shootout following the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013, spoke at the New Hampshire Association of Chiefs of Police annual conference.
His talk was entitled, “A Wounded Officer’s Perspective” and was intended to open a discussion on the need for critical and immediate care during an active shooter response.
Donohue was one of six law enforcement officers invited to speak at the conference.
“It’s a great honor to be selected to speak in front of the collective voice of law enforcement in the State of New Hampshire,” said Sgt. Donohue. “I hope my remarks shed some light on the often avoided issues of police injuries and the aftermath and recovery both for injured officers and their families.”
Donohue focused on a number of factors that profoundly impacted his life after his surgery, including privacy concerns, media exposure, family member impact and department support.
