MELROSE, MASS. (WHDH) - For 37 years, Scott Macauley has been handing out free Thanksgiving meals in Melrose.
In years past, he would welcome a crowd of area residents over for a meal. But since the pandemic, he has switched up to offer those in need with meals to go.
“We’ve got white meat, dark meat,” Macauley said as he looked over a container of food.
“I absolutely hate to eat alone and I said, ‘I’m not going to spend Thanksgiving alone,’ so I put a little ad in the Melrose Free Press saying that I would cook Thanksgiving dinner for up to 12 people who found themselves in the same boat,” Macauley said of the year the annual tradition was born.
Of the people who come, Macauley said, “It’s a place to go — more than it is the food.”
One of the people who turned out said, “Because of Scott, people are not alone on Thanksgiving.”
Before they leave, Macauley makes sure those who come by write down what they’re thankful for.
