MELROSE, MASS. (WHDH) - Melrose Police are mourning the death of a retired canine officer.
According to police, K9 Jony died suddenly over the holiday weekend.
A 9-year-old German Shepherd, Jony was born in Slovakia and arrived in the US when he was 10 months old.
Members of the Melrose Police Department will wear black mourning bands this week and the flag outside the station will sit at half-staff.
Jony retired in 2015 after working with Patrol Officer Joseph Donovan. He had developed an inoperable detached retina and cataract in his right eye, threatening his vision.
He remained in the care of Officer Donovan’s family in his retirement.
