NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. (WHDH) - Students at Merrimack College were ordered to shelter in place last night after reports of an armed clown on campus.

The college evacuated one building before determining the hoax was part of a promotion for an event in town called “Scarefest.”

Clown sightings were reported on social media across New England and the country.

In Swansea, people reported a scary-looking clown and in Agawam, one clown held a sign that read “Free Hugs.”

Overnight at Pennsylvania State University, thousands of students took to the streets in search of clowns, some holding baseball bats.

A Connecticut school district is banning clown costumes and any “symbols of terror” during this year’s Halloween season as authorities investigate the authenticity of a number of clown-related social media posts.

New Haven Public School officials said Monday principals and building leaders have been requested to ban the costumes until additional information is available.
