MERRIMACK, N.H. (AP) — Police in Merrimack, N.H., are telling people to be on the lookout for an elaborate job scam that could result in identity theft.
Police said a man responded to a job posting on a legitimate career search engine. The applicant was contacted by email for a Yahoo instant messenger preliminary interview.
Once the applicant initiated the messenger chat, misspellings and inappropriate responses from the interviewer concerned him. He did some follow-up work on the company's website and learned the position advertised had already been filled and was no longer posted.
The chat was disconnected when the applicant asked the interviewer for a phone number.
Police said the scam artist did some legwork about the company and its human resources department to provide enough legitimate content for applicants to reveal information.
