MERRIMACK, N.H. (WHDH) — Sharon Quigley, a 51-year-old teacher at The Learning Experience daycare center, turned herself into police after learning of allegations that she assaulted a two-year-old child.
Merrimack police charged Quigley with a single count of assaulting a child. The chief described the woman as handling the child roughly.
Police they were tipped off by the parents of the two-year-old child. After investigating, a warrant was issued for Quigley’s arrest.
“There is no reason to believe there was any permanent injury as has been reported by the child's parent, but it seems continue a case of aggressive handling as opposed to an assault where somebody would figure or think a child was punched, hurt or slapped or otherwise injured ,” said Chief Mark Doyle, Merrimack, NH Police Dept.
Police did confirm she turned herself in. A manager who works at The Learning Experience said the daycare is cooperating and Quigley no longer works there.
“As it was report by a fellow staff member she observed another teacher conducting herself in a manner she felt was threatening to that child,” Chief Doyle said.
“I don’t really know what's going on with it. You find out when everything comes out, “said Dave Coyle, who works across from the center.
The teacher posted $1,500 bail and was released.
“The child is doing well, had suffered minor injuries as a result of being handled the way that she was and is currently being cared for and attended to by her parents,” said Doyle.
Quigley has been charged with a single count of simple assault and will be arraigned next month.
The charge carries up to a year in prison and a $2,000 fine. The chief says there is no reason to believe any other children were affected or even that this child was assaulted more than once.
