The holiday season has only just started, but the Salvation Army has already received a massive gift from a couple in Minnesota.

The couple dropped a $500,000 check into one of the red kettles outside a supermarket near Minneapolis. Salvation Army Twin Cities said they are incredibly thankful for the huge donation.

"This is such a huge boost to us because we were running about a half million dollars behind," said Salvation Army Twin Cities Commander Jeff Strickler.

The couple, who wants to remain anonymous, said in a statement that they know what it is like to struggle. Early in their marriage, they said they relied on discarded grocery store food. They said the gift was made in memory of one of their fathers, who was a WWI veteran.
