SUDBURY, MASS. (WHDH) - The Sudbury Fire Department battled a large structure fire on Codjer Lane Wednesday afternoon, leaving a building destroyed and officials monitoring air quality as the night went on.
Around 2:40 p.m., Sudbury Fire responded to a 911 report of smoky conditions at a storage building in the area. Fire Chief John Whalen said he arrived first to discover an approximately 60 by 100 foot storage building fully engulfed in fire at the scene.
Second and third alarms were called, bringing in over 70 firefighters from surrounding communities.
First responders said the mission required tankers and a shuttle to bring water in from a nearby pond on the property.
“We have four tankers here from surrounding communities,” Sudbury Fire Chief John Whalen said. “Then on this other side of the property, there’s a very large irrigation pond. We were able to set up a pumping operation and draft it out of that area and bring water to the fire.”
There were no reported injuries, but the storage building contained equipment and some fertilizers, according to officials, which prompted first responders to request a hazmat team.
Fire crews vacated the scene around 10 p.m. Wednesday, but are still asking residents in the area to keep their windows and doors closed for now as a precaution. Residents will be alerted if other concerns arise, Whalen said.
Earlier, Sudbury Police had asked for drivers to avoid the area. There were several road closures in and around the fire station as well, according to police.
The property, Cavicchio Greenhouses, has been in the Cavicchio family for four generations, and is known as one of New England’s largest wholesale greenhouses and landscaping businesses. Responders were able to contain the fire to one building, which is surrounded by many other similar structures on the property, officials said.
“I’m happy to say that all the other greenhouses surrounding it, and the storage buildings next to it, are fully intact,” Whalen said.
The burning utility building completely caved in on itself, Whalen said, making it difficult to determine what exactly caused the fire. The cause is under investigation by the District 14 Fire Investigation Team and the State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office.
