ITHACA, N.Y. (WHDH) — A New York boy battling brain cancer got a special honor Monday as he was made police officer for a day.
Colin Toland, 9, was sworn in as a member of the Ithaca Police Department in front of his family, dozens of officers and his third grade class. Colin has endured six surgeries and his father Ian Hayward said he is taking it all in stride.
“Colin doesn’t look at obstacles the way I’ve seen most people,” said Hayward. “He sees every day as an opportunity to have fun. If he’s having a tough time, he usually bounces back with a laugh or a joke.”
Ithaca Police Chief John Barber said Colin’s positive attitude is one reason why he was honored to have the boy join the force.
“It’s inspiring and he has touched the hearts of every single officer you see here,” said Barber.
Colin said he wanted to become a police officer because he likes helping people. He said his favorite part about being a police officer is the badges
The city of Ithaca also announced that going forward, Sept. 12 will be Colin Toland Day.
