Bit of an unusual snowstorm this go-around. We had a decent thump of snow for a few hours last evening and then there was a sizeable lull late last evening into the early overnight hours and then a blitz of snow since 4am. This second round of snow has been accompanied by fierce winds as our wintercane explodes offshore (check out some satellite pics of this beast–it has an eye-like structure at its center). Wind gusts have been in the range of 30-50 mph (highest at the coast) with gusts near 65mph anticipated on Cape Cod (perhaps Cape Ann). The snow portion of the storm will fade over the next 1-2 hours while the wind will continue to crank right through the afternoon. Falling snow won’t be an issue this afternoon but blowing & drifting of the snow will be right into tonight.
By tonight, skies clear out and temps will head for zero. That wind will still be cranking between 20-40mph which will set up dangerous wind chills of -10 to -20. Exposed flesh at wind chills around -20 will be prone to frostbite. These dangerous conditions will persist into early Monday morning. Thankfully, a holiday means a lot of folks will be inside early tomorrow morning.
The upcoming week continues our cold & snow pattern with another storm heading this way on Tuesday. As of now, it looks to be a glancing blow with 2″ (maybe 4″) expected. After that, it looks to be quiet but cold for the remainder of the week.
Snow stats:
* ~85″ in the past 3 weeks. Never before and never again will Boston get that amount of snow in 3 weeks.
* February 2015 is the snowiest month ever in Boston history. 55.7″ of snow blasting January 2005 43.3″
* Boston seasonal snow total is up to 89.7″—3rd all-time with #1 less than 20″ away—winter 95/96 107.6″. I personally think we’ll get there before the season is done.
Hang in there, we pick up another 20 minutes of daylight this week.
