Two people, including a small child, were transported to the hospital following a car that crashed into a day care in Billerica on Thursday.

According to Billerica Police Deputy Chief Roy Frost, officers responded to A Brighter Rainbow Learning Center on Thursday afternoon following reports that a dark-colored Subaru had crashed into the side of the building.

The driver, a 38-year-old woman from Billerica, had suffered a medical episode. While the incident occurred, the woman hit multiple vehicles on the shoulder of the plaza at 880 Boston Road.

The woman then drove up onto the curb, struck a fence, and crashed into the side of the day care. Police say the car crashed through the wall and directly into the main childcare area.

Four children were inside the center at the time, and at least three other children were outside.

One of the children, a male toddler under 2 years of age, was struck and pinned under the vehicle.

A neighbor heard the crash and jumped into action to save the toddler.

"Someone was just screaming that he was under the car, under the car, so I just reacted and pulled him out," Mike Madigan said. "It was underneath, I got cuts and scratches and stuff pulling stuff out but I mean he wasn’t actually pinned by the vehicle, it was just all the debris and stuff under there, he was kind of wedged, he was so small that if he were any bigger he would’ve been seriously hurt."

Madigan is also a youth leader at the church next to his house. ‘

"We were coming out of the back of my house to come over for youth group, which we have here on Thursday, and then just started hearing a really loud noise, and obviously something was wrong," Madigan said. "I think that I did what anyone would do when kids are in danger."

Authorities say the boy was alert and conscious and was taken by ambulance to Lowell General Hospital.

The woman driving the vehicle was transported to Lahey Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

hey are looking at a possible medical condition, but have ruled out drugs, alcohol and speed as possible causes for the crash.

Officials say the incident remains open and under investigation.
